The short version: I don’t use “generative” AI. I used an algorithm-based spellcheck for one book, then stopped.
(Updated 7/26 to be more concise. Same facts.)
- During line/copy-editing on The Strangers’ Sanctuary, I used ProWritingAid, an algorithm-based, locally hosted spelling/grammar checking software. I reconsidered this in the middle of the process, but since the book was nearly done, I did not want to start over.
- I did not use any “generative” features of PWA. I used it to find punctuation errors, frequently used words, and the like, and then fixed them with my human brain and judgement.
- No other work of mine uses AI in any capacity. I ask all cover artists and designers not to use it, and do not use it myself.
- I don’t knowingly participate in any sales or group activities (promotions, etc.) that use AI-generated copy, books, or art. AI-covered/made books have joined sales after me, which irritates me; I plan to look for rules against this in the future before joining.
- In fact, The Healers’ Road and The Healers’ Home were pirated by Anthropic as part of the works covered in the Bartz v. Anthropic class action lawsuit. I did not get compensation because I had not filed for copyright in the US. (A cautionary tale.)
There is a disclaimer at the beginning of Strangers, along with the content warnings, about the use of PWA. I understand if this crosses a line for you as a reader. Everyone decides for themselves what they believe and what they wish to support.
I support human creativity and actual intelligence.
I also do not care what anyone else does with their workflow, idea creation, editing, etc. I don’t knowingly buy books that use AI, because as a consumer and a reader, I have the right to make that decision based on anything I please. If you feel compelled to argue with me about what you do, please know that I do not care. Your defensiveness is not my problem.
